3 Schedules to Be More Intentional with Your Freelance Life
I worked on the 4th of July. Normally this might have bothered me since the 4th, at least in this state, is held sacred as a cabin weekend to be spent basking by a lake up north. But this year I celebrated Independence Day by working, and I did it on purpose.
I took off several days in the middle of June for an extended cabin weekend---sans obnoxious holiday weekend traffic and amateur fireworks shows---and I made up for it by treating the actual holiday as just another workday.
And you know what? It was great. No one else was working, so I was able to focus on client work without any distractions from email or social media. I wasn't resentful or bitter about missing out on a holiday because I knew I'd already taken my time off---and I'd taken it at a time that was more convenient and restful than the actual holiday would've been.
That's part of the beauty of being a creative entrepreneur: you get to set your own schedule. But so many of us with the flexibility to work whenever we want don't take advantage of it. The 9-to-5, M-F workweek is so engrained in our minds that we have trouble breaking free.
I used to feel guilty if I didn't work on a Tuesday afternoon because I got lunch with a friend instead . . . and then I'd turn around and be upset that I was stuck at my desk wrapping up client work on a Saturday. In reality, there was no need for all those negative emotions. All I did was shuffle my workweek into a schedule that fit my life . . . which is half the point of being a freelancer in the first place!
If you're looking to be a little more intentional with your freelance schedule, I've got a post up on the Freelance to Freedom Project blog that's right up your alley. I pinpointed the three schedules that never fail to help me make the most of my flexible schedule. Maybe one of them is just what you need to break out of the 9-to-5 mindset!
